Castle keep, Alhambra Palace, SpainThis week I’ve decided to take part in Sue’s ‘A Word a Week Challenge’. If you would like to take part and follow the trail, click on the link and follow Sue’s instructions.

This week’s word and theme is ‘Castle’. A favourite subject of mine when it comes to photography. When I think castle, I think Spain, and particularly Andalusia and the Moorish castles that dot the landscape. I thought as I have already presented a few of my fave castle pics in recent posts and challenges, I would do so this time in black and white, which is a style I love to play with as the sense of stark contrast can really alter the mood of an image.

Alhambra Palace, Granada, Spain

The Alhambra Palace as some of you will know is a favourite haunt of mine.

The following castle is another of the many smaller Moorish fortifications that pepper the landscape, almost one on every lone peak throughout Andalusia driving from Cordoba back to Granada…

Castle at Espejo, Andalusia, Spain

This castle is particularly special however, El Alcazaba in old town of Almería, one of the oldest and most impressive of the Moorish castles in the region, it spans a huge area with the main keep and palace overlooking the town and the harbour below. Also my playground when I was very young before it became a tourist centre…

  1. Wow, interesting castles. And I love the contrast and instant mood the black and white in this instance provides. We never got a chance to visit castles when we were in Spain (as a child). My mom had three school age kids on her hands for vacation, so we hit places that were near I think.

    😦

    Next time!!!!

    1. I took these photos while on holiday last year with my family, including my dad and my brother. Having the extra hands certainly helped with the children, but we managed to explore most of the castles we came across. The kids loved it! 🙂

Ah, yes sometimes it’s easier to take the path of least resistance! lol… but there is always a next time 🙂

    1. Thank you Sophia! The last castle was always a real fantasy place for me when I was very young. It was always such an imposing structure at the top of the hill overlooking the town where we lived, and back then it was just a ruin. Anyone could walk in and out, and me and my brother were often let out by ourselves to play, so we’d go up to the castle to investigate. It was the best fun. I’ve been hooked ever since on castles and ancient sites. 🙂
